Talks about publication, the new year, and Tiramisu!

Here we are, facing a new year. In 2006 I signed my first publishing contract, and I now have 8 books out, 4 more scheduled for next year and 5 scheduled for 2010. Whoa. How things change.

And yet they don't change THAT much. I still worry when I submit a book ("will the editor like it?" "will I have a bunch of changes to make before they buy it?"), I'm still grateful when a manuscript is bought, and I'm still amazed that people buy my books and seem to love my stories -- I thought I was the only one who would love a wise-cracking dog who communicates telepathically with a prissy, uptight guy. But people seem to love Cerberus, the dog in my latest book, "Endurance" and Nico, the hero.

I promised myself when I started the Road to Publication that I would (1) have fun doing it, (2) not take myself too seriously and (3) write the kinds of stories I want without feeling compelled to change the age of the h/h (mine are middle-aged) or add a bunch of sex (my books are 'spicy' but not 'hot'). So far, so good. I'm still finding editors to buy them and readers to read them, so I'm going to stick with it for a while longer.

Speaking of Nico: I'm including his recipe for tiramisu. Nico was infected with an immortality virus and has had a chance to study a lot of careers: musician, chef, assassin ... He once attended culinary school with Julia Child and that's where he learned this recipe.

I hope you all have a happy and safe holiday season and are all looking forward to 2009. There's a lot of challenges ahead for the country and its people, but I think we're up to the task. Exciting times lie ahead!

Nico’s Eggless Tiramisu

½ cup brewed coffee, cooled ¼ cup Amaretto liqueur
8 oz mascarpone cheese ¾ cup heavy cream
1 tbsp vanilla 20 ladyfingers
1 tbsp unsweetened cocoa powder
3 tbsp sugar

Combine coffee & amaretto. Divide the cheese in half, stirring coffee mixture into one half. Set aside. Whip cream with vanilla and sugar in a medium bowl until stiff peaks form. Fold whipped cream into remaining cheese.

Line a 7x11 dish with parchment paper and put 10 ladyfingers in the bottom. Spoon half of the coffee mixture over the cookies. Top with half of the whipped-cream mixture. Repeat layers. Sprinkle with cocoa. Refrigerate overnight before serving.

SPECIAL GUEST BLOGGER – Author J.L. Wilson talks about Trading Cars

As I write this, the snow is flying outside -- not much but enough to make me appreciate the fire in the fireplace, that's for sure.

On a gloomy day like this, I often snuggle in to write, but today I'm going to venture out to car shop. The frugal part of me balks at this activity, but the practical side of me says I should. My current car isn't that old, but I feel I need an all-wheel drive car in the snowy North. I had one a few years back but traded 'up' for a front-wheel drive car.

Big mistake. I've sweated through three winters, worrying about my commute. So I've decided to learn my lesson, take the trade-in, and get a car that will get me through my winters. I'm somewhat consoled by the fact the trade-in will be good (already got an estimate) so I'm not going to be out of pocket too much.

So here's what I've learned from this experience:

1. Don't be swayed by what dealers tell you. No, a FWD car isn't the same as an AWD car and no, I won't get accustomed to a FWD car easily.

2. Go with your gut instinct. Do you love the car? Does it feel right? Does it fit you?

3. Take the spouse with you to test drive it and DEMAND that he tell you how it feels to him. I took the Spouse with me to test drive the last car, but he didn't give me his opinion until AFTER I've bought it -- too late to inform that 'gee, it's not very comfortable for me in the passenger seat.' Since I do most of the driving in the family in my car, this was an ISSUE. Sigh. This time he has to come with me to give it a try.

4. Be prepared to walk away. The sales people will try to do their jobs -- put you in a car that might be outside your $$ comfort zone. Walk away if needed. Explain gently but firmly that you want to spend $X.XX and really no more. Smile, be polite, and leave if needed. I did that yesterday. I drove the car, loved it, said I'd think about it. I'll call 'em back today and dicker over the phone ('do you have an older model one? I'd really like to shave some money off the price.')

5. Give them contact info that won't interfere with your life. I gave them my cell phone # (I seldom turn on my phone) and my 'spare' email address. Messages can merrily pile up and I won't care.

For more useful advice, check this out:

This is sort of my one-stop-shopping spot for info about cars.

Wish me luck!

Worth Raving About:

LINDA EDER "The Other Side of Me"

Soulful, heart-felt, contemporary with a twist of country—this album is a great listen for some “me time” or drive time. Yet, it’s energizing enough to clean house to or take along on your next walk.

“The Other Side of Me” is filled with fabulous vocals and easy-going, catchy tunes you can’t help but want to sing along to. Particular favorites are “If You Believe in Love (The Way I Do),” “Lifted,” and “Make Today Beautiful.”

The best thing I enjoy about this album is its over-all uplifting nature. Listening to it makes me smile. A total feel-good experience.

Candy, Corpses, & Classified Ads

A new book, a new recipe!

As you know, I like to have a recipe that I use for promo for my books. The books aren't about cooking, but the dish shows up in the book, then I create a recipe card for it and use that as promo for the book.

Well, I got the cart before the horse this time: I've got a recipe, but didn't have the book.

Luckily, I was working on a new book and I found a way to sneak this item in there. Isn't it funny how that happens sometimes? You have something good that sort of falls into your lap, but you're not quite sure how to use it. Then you turn around, and voila: there's the use!

The heroine in this book is a woman who's inherited some Big Money (or she will inherit it if her ex-brother-in-law will drop his lawsuit). I try very hard to keep politics, etc., out of my books, but some of the recent political figures are just too good to pass up -- I couldn't make up characters like that!

So a couple of the characters are based on people in the news today. Depending on how the elections come out this fall, we'll see if my villain scenario is right or wrong .

Give this one a try: it should be interesting since I've never seen a recipe for single-serving chocolate cake. Here's a caveat: I haven't tried this one yet, but I have it on good authority that it's yummy.

So give it a try!

J L Wilson

4 tablespoons cake flour(that’s plain flour, not self-rising)
4 tablespoons sugar
2 tablespoons baking cocoa
1 egg
3 tablespoons milk
3 tablespoons oil
3 tablespoons chocolate chips(optional)
a small splash of vanilla
1 coffee mug

Add dry ingredients to mug, and mix well
Add the egg and mix thoroughly.
Pour in the milk and oil and mix well.
Add the chocolate chips (if using) and vanilla, and mix again.
Put your mug in the microwave and cook for 3 minutes at 1000 watts.
The cake will rise over the top of the mug, but don’t be alarmed!
Allow to cool a little, and tip out onto a plate if desired.
EAT! (this can serve 2 if you want to feel slightly more virtuous).

We had such inspirational responses from the Idina Menzel contest, I thought I’d share a few with you throughout the next week.

This is what some of your fellow MOMdotCOM-ers stand for:

“I stand for so many different things. But really, taking a stand for what you believe in and who you are as a person. So many people, especially teens today are put under stress to fit in and whatnot, but that really shouldn't be necessary. I stand for being yourself ALL the time, and not having people judge you all the time. Being your self definitely applies to Idina as well- she's always her own self, fun, unique, and hilarious, and we all love her for it.”

“I stand for family. If family is your top priority, then everything else makes sense.”

“I stand for being the best I can be, and for being a good example for the school children who pass through my doors and my heart daily!”

“I stand for freedom. Freedom to be who we are without hesitation. To be loving, happy, generous and freespirited. To be open minded and open hearted. I stand and encourage others to stand and let the beauty that is inside to shine forth and light the world. We can't always control what happens in our lives or the lives of those around us, but we can control what happens in our hearts. I stand to show others that no matter what happens I can be cheerful and positive and so can they.”

SPECIAL GUEST: Author, J. L. Wilson

Our 16 year old TV finally bit the dust. It was one of the old monsters with the big tube that weighed a ton and took up more than its share of space in our living room.

We used the little black & white one for a few days then I turned my husband loose on Consumer Reports and sent him out to buy a new one. Three hours later (what is it with guy and toys that make noise?) he returned with a Sony flat screen. Apparently there are no more 'tube' TVs, only these flat jobbies.

Ouch. A bit pricy, but the up-side is, it should last another 16 years or so. I hope. Since I watch about an hour of TV a day, the thing is seldom used and often gathers dust. We considered going TV-less, but I have to admit to enjoying my hour of HGTV at night or the Food Channel now and again.

This gets back to my previous idea of 'conscious consumerism'. We thought long and hard before replacing the TV, and the one he bought was on sale, relatively cheap (as these things go), and should be adequate. It didn't have all the bells & whistles, and he successfully resisted the Lure of Fun Things. You go, boy.

I'm going to kick back tonight with a Rum Slush (recipe follows) and give it a try ... once we get it hooked up, of course, to the satellite, the DVD, and the other gadgets.

Now where did I put those instruction manuals?

Rum Slushes
(makes lots)

1 12oz can frozen lemonade
1 12oz can frozen orange juice
2 cups (1 pint) rum
9 c water
2 c sugar

Boil water & sugar then simmer 15 minutes.
Add remaining ingredients. Freeze. Stir occasionally in freezer.

To serve: fill glasses 3/4 full, top with Squirt, 7-up, etc.

THOUGHT FOR TODAY ~ It's Hip To Be Cheap ...
By J. L. Wilson

It seems like the whole 'frugal' thing has now become hip. There's a lot of news stories, shows, specials, etc., on frugal tips for living. Coupon clipping, shopping at the right time (of year or day), the right place ... I've seen tips on all of these things.

One thing that's struck me, though, is something very basic that's very seldom discussed and that's what I call "conscious consumerism." Many people shop because it's a recreational activity. I have no quibble with that -- I don't mind a good browse now and again at my local mall. But many people use buying as a means of happiness, as though with just One More Purchase, they'll be happy. It doesn't matter if it's a purchase from the Dollar Store or from Nordstrom's. It's the purchase that makes them happy.

I found that if I step back and look at why I shop, then I often make my best shopping decisions. I'm trying to use the same sort of consciousness around food: am I hungry or do I just want to eat? Do I need to shop or am I bored? Do I want to buy something or do I need to buy something?

I'll report back and tell you later this year if it's working ...

And following my theme of 'frugal is better', here's a simple dip recipe, especially good with cauliflower or other crudités:

1 bottle French dressing
1 pt. jar mayonaise
3oz. grated Parmesan cheese

Add garlic salt or onion salt to taste

Keeps just about forever in the fridge. Enjoy!

– or Dining Disasters I’ve Survived
By Marilu Mann

“Marilu, we’ve decided to have our family dinner at your house. We will be there at 6 on Sunday.”

Nothing can strike fear into my heart faster than that ominous phone call from a family member. It is worse than finding Freddie, Jason and Michael in my closet when the electricity is out and I’m home alone. In fact, I’d rather face those three than my family at the dinner table.

Not only do I have to clean my house so that my "Junior League" family members won't feel the need to pitch in and help me ‘pick up,’ but I also have to ensure that no "dinner disasters" take place.

You know what those are, surely... I mean, haven't some of you left the paper in the pie plate or left that icky giblet packet in the turkey by mistake?

Or served brandied fruit to the tee-totaler in the family? Or used a bad pint of oysters for the oyster dressing? Yes, there is nothing quite as bonding as a family trip to the emergency room.

Of course, if I don’t poison them on purpose and Uncle Bud doesn’t remind Aunt Sissy about that unfortunate marriage of hers, it will be a good dinner.
True stories from my family files include the Thanksgiving dinner when Mama proudly presented her very first pecan pie to a table that included her mother and her mother-in-law. I can’t remember which one took the first bite, but the reaction was not what my mama was hoping for. She’d left the piece of paper that separates the two pie shells IN. So along with a delicious piece of pecan pie, everyone got a nice hunk of roughage.

Then there was the time Mama was entertaining her boss and his wife. She’d made her special pork chops along with her good brown gravy. Her decision to offer the gravy in the china gravy boat was one any Southern Belle might have made. If only she’d wiped that one small drip of brown liquid from the handle. It might not have slipped—dumping a good cup of hot brown gravy in her boss’s wife’s lap.

So when I heard that I was going to be hosting Sunday dinner, I had to quickly figure out the menu least likely to become a Family Story. What are your family stories about food fiascos? I’d love to hear what you did that lives on in the memories of your kin.

Share your best (or worst) dinner disasters with me in the comments (or via email to ) and I’ll send you a link to my Red Beans and Rice. One lucky winner will get a complete set of my recipe cards featuring recipes my characters love to eat!

By special guest blogger, author, Carolyn Hughey

I’m a fellow author with Barb, who writes contemporary romance. My first release, Cupid’s Web, is about a young Italian woman who has no desire to be barefoot, pregnant, and in the kitchen, slaving away at a stove, much to her Mama’s disappointment.

Unlike my character, I’m a former professional chef. Although cooking is my forte, devoting time to my writing has taken a front row seat to the stove. That said, there are so many wonderful tools out there which provide fast and easy ways to juggle a job, and family while still producing a yummy meal in less than twenty minutes preparation time.

I’ve recently rediscovered my crock-pot, the all-in-one meal that turns out to be a winner every time I use it. Here’s one of my favorite recipes.

1 cup all-purpose flour
1 tsp garlic powder
1 tsp onion powder
1 tsp salt
½ tsp black pepper
2 tbls canola oil
1 large onion, chopped
1 bag of small carrots
1 small bag of new potatoes, sliced in half
32 oz beef broth poured over top of roast

Place the first five ingredients into a large freezer bag. Seal the bag and shake to combine the spices. Add a 4 lb bottom round roast to the bag, seal, and shake until you’ve coated all sides of the roast. Set aside.

Add 2 tbls of oil into a large skillet, or heavy pot, and heat on medium high heat. Remove the roast from the bag, shaking to remove any excess flour, and place it into the heated skillet and sear all sides to seal in the flavorful juices, until golden. Save the leftover flour for thickening the gravy when the roast is done.

Prepare the onions, carrots, and potatoes, and place into the crock-pot in the same sequence. Place seared roast over top, add the beef broth, cover and set the dial on low for 12 hours, or high, for six hours.

When the roast is done, remove the meat and vegetables onto a serving platter, slice, and serve.

Family films always seem to be hit and miss with my bunch and we often wind up in separate theatres or separate rooms when it’s movie viewing time. A PLUMM SUMMER (William Baldwin, Henry Winkler, Jeff Daniels, Ben Trotter) changed that dynamic instantly. Granted, I had to twist an arm or two (in particularly, my hubby’s...) to get everyone to agree to see it, but ten minutes into the film, I knew it was a hit with everyone.

Set in 1968, A PLUMM SUMMER captures spirit of rural America, drawing the audience in to the lives of two boys (one pre-K, the other a teen) who are stuck in the middle of family crisis and the solving of a local mystery.

Sounds simple, right? It’s not. The depth of character development and plot is impressive and the acting superb, making this a must-see movie. It’s thought provoking, uplifting, and will bring a smile to all hearts, young and old.

A highly recommended, enjoyable experience!
