Thought of the Day: Frugal Fix

If your dishwasher is anything like mine, you may find that it doesn't always get your dishes as clean as you'd like. This may not be your dishwashers fault. It could simply be that your washer arms are clogged with mineral deposits.

Sprinkle baking soda over the washer arms, making sure that the baking soda goes directly into the holes. Pour white vinegar over the arms and allow the mixture to bubble. When the bubbling stops, run the rinse cycle on your machine, and voila! Clean, clear washer arms mean cleaner dishes for you!

Thought of the Day: Trifle!

Looking for a beautiful and simple dessert this holiday season? A trifle may be just what you are looking for. Layered in a clear dish or bowl, these desserts are elegant and delicious!

Here are a few delicious trifles you may want to try this holiday season:

Black Forest Trifle

2 packages brownies (prepared)
1/2 cup Rum or as desired
2 cans Cherry pie filling (19 oz)

2 packages Chocolate pudding & pie Filling, cookable
4 tablespoons Cocoa (unsweetened)2 cups Whipping cream
6 tablespoons Sugar
1 teaspoon Vanilla
Maraschino cherries

Note: you can make your own brownies or use chocolate muffins or cupcakes.

Pudding: follow directions adding cocoa, cook until thick. Cool. Cut brownies into 1 inch cubes; line bottom of 2 quart bowl of trifle dish with brownie cubes; sprinkle with 2-4 tbsp. rum.
Spoon half of cherry pie filling over brownies; top with half of chocolate pudding. Repeat procedure with remaining brownies, rum, pie filling and pudding. Cover and chill.

Beat whipping cream until foamy; gradually add sugar and vanilla, beating until soft peaks form. Spread over custard; garnish with maraschino cherries.

Chocolate Trifle

1 (19.8 ounce) package brownie mix
1 (3.9 ounce) package instant chocolate pudding mix
1/2 cup water
1 (14 ounce) can sweetened condensed milk
1 (8 ounce) container frozen whipped topping, thawed
1 (12 ounce) container frozen whipped topping, thawed
1 (1.5 ounce) bar chocolate candy

Prepare brownie mix according to package directions and cool completely. Cut into 1 inch squares. In a large bowl, combine pudding mix, water and sweetened condensed milk. Mix until smooth, then fold in 8 ounces whipped topping until no streaks remain.

In a trifle bowl or glass serving dish, place half of the brownies, half of the pudding mixture and half of the 12 ounce container of whipped topping. Repeat layers. Shave chocolate onto top layer for garnish. Refrigerate 8 hours before serving.

Raspberry Trifle

1 1/2 cups heavy cream
1/4 cup white sugar
2 (8 ounce) packages cream cheese, softened
2 teaspoons lemon juice
1 1/2 teaspoons vanilla extract
1/2 cup white sugar
1 (10.75 ounce) package prepared pound cake
2 (10 ounce) packages frozen raspberries, thawed
2 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder, for dusting

In a medium bowl, beat cream with 1/4 cup sugar until stiff peaks form. In another bowl, cream together cream cheese, lemon juice, vanilla and 1/2 cup sugar. Fold 2 cups of whipped cream into cream cheese mixture. Reserve remaining whipped cream.

Slice pound cake into 18 - 1/2 inch slices. Drain raspberries, reserving juice. Line the bottom of a 3 quart glass bowl or trifle bowl with one-third of the cake slices. Drizzle with some raspberry juice. Spread one-fourth of the cream cheese mixture over cake. Sift one-fourth of the cocoa over that. Sprinkle with one-third of the raspberries. Repeat layers twice.

Top with remaining cream cheese mixture, whipped cream and sifted cocoa. Cover and refrigerate 4 hours before serving.

Mmmmm, mmmmmm! Bad for the waistline, sure, but great for the soul. ;)

Thought of the Day: Traveling

Are you traveling this holiday season? Let's face it, unless you have a 4 door sled, and 8 flying reindeer, holiday travel is tough! We'd like to share a few tips with you to help de-stress your holiday travel plans, ensuring happy holidays for all.
  • Pack Smartly Don't wait until the last minute to pack. Take mix and match outfits, and plan your needs long before you open that suitcase. Remember, the less you take, the easier that suitcase is to cart around.
  • Get Some Rest! Don't burn the candle at both ends, like so many of us do, leading up to the holidays. This is bound to leave you tired and crabby, making you a less than perfect travel companion. Be sure to get plenty of sleep leading up to your traveling days. Everyone will thank you. ;)
  • Book A Room While this may not be the most frugal way to travel, sometimes it is the sanest. Even if friends and/or family have offered to put you up, think long and hard before you accept. Sometimes it's nice to have a place that allows you to escape the hectic holiday atmosphere. A little peace and quiet can be worth its weight in gold.
  • What Am I Forgetting? Don't forget your prescription medications and your medical insurance cards- you never know when you might find yourself in a difficult situation. Take your emergency numbers with you, and let your neighbors know you will be out of town. Don't forget to charge your cell phone, and be sure you have a charger that will work in your vehicle, just in case.
  • Timing Is Everything Watch you departure and arrival times, to be sure that they do not correspond with rush hour either at home, or at your destination. The last thing anyone wants to be doing before the holidays is sitting in bumper to bumper traffic.
  • Stop Often If you are taking a long car trip, be sure to stop every couple of hours to stretch your legs and back.
  • I Can't Travel Anymore Can't travel? Host the holidays at your house and bring your family to you. Have the meal catered, or head out to a favorite restaurant. It's not what or where you eat, but the family traditions we create through the years that matter. If you can't manage the old traditions, start new ones!

Thought for Today ~ Twenty Sexy Resolutions to Make this Year

(Okay, so this deviates a little from frugal living, but a little spice is good too!)

For over two thousand years people have been making New Year’s resolutions. Many use the marking of the New Year to break bad habits or begin healthier ones. Some reflect on the past year and think about renewal or improvements for the year ahead.

This year, while you’re mulling over or writing down your resolutions to exercise more, stick to a budget, or find a new job-why not add a new resolution?-one that will be easy to keep.

Thought for Today ~ Work At Home Jobs : Call Center Representative

Do you enjoy helping others? Do you have a gift for gab? Do you have pockets of quiet time available to talk on the phone? Then, you may want to consider employment with a call center service.

This growing field of opportunity for the at-home worker typically involves answering in-coming calls ranging from taking customer product orders to coordinating maintenance repair services. Many companies will allow you to work as little as fifteen minutes a day to full-time hours each week.

Thought for The Day ~ Plan To Shed a Few Pounds for the New Year?

To quote an article from USA Today, “Americans in huge numbers — 15 million to 30 million, industry watchers say — are tossing medical caveats aside and shedding weight on low-carb, high-protein diets.”

The statistics are staggering but let’s face it, while low-carb appears to be the current path to follow diet-wise, the products hitting the market are less than pocketbook friendly. When a box of Twinkies® is half the price of a box of CarbWell® bars, how does a person living on a tuna budget afford a lobster low-carb lifestyle?

Pie! With the holidays around the corner, and fall firmly in place, thoughts of hot, freshly baked pies cooling on the kitchen counter fill my head on a daily basis . Who wouldn't want a fresh piece of apple or blueberry pie smothered in vanilla ice cream or whipped cream? Mmmmm.

Many people are intimidated by the thought of making their own pie crust, but nothing on he market comes close to a really good homemade crust. Is your crust tough? Or crumbly? These tips will help you get that tender flaky crust each and every time you make your family's favorite pies:
  • Think cold! Everything associated with making your crust should be kept as cold as possible up until the time you use it. The bowl, your pastry cutter, everything that can be chilled, should be chilled. Warm dough gets sticky. Sticky dough requires more flour. More flour means a tough crust. Be sure to refrigerate your crust, as well, before working with it.
  • The fat in your pie crust is critical if you like a flaky crust. The key is to not have your "shortening" melt before it gets into the oven. Chill your shortening, or butter, 15 minutes in the freezer before you add it to your crust recipe. This will produce the flakiest pastry.
  • After mixing, you want your crust to still be a little crumbly. If the fat has warmed too much, your dough will be sticky. Place it in the freezer for 15-20 minutes before you begin working with it. If your crust is too dry, it will crack when you roll it. sprinkle with drops of ice cold water onto your crust until it is the right consistency.
  • Remember! Try not to overwork your pie crust dough. This will result in a tough crust. The less handling, the more tender the finished product will be.

Happy baking!

Thought of the Day

With a rare October snowstorm in the Northern US today, it reminds me that nature really is unpredictable. Can we be better prepared for nature's wrath? Sure. Winter is right around the corner, we should all be as prepared as we can be for the first storms of the season.

  • Keep extra bottled water on hand
  • Have flashlights, candles, and a battery operated radio on hand
  • Be sure to have plenty of batteries for the radio and the flashlights. ;)
  • Keep rock salt and deicer on hand
  • Keep foods in your house that can be eaten without electricity
  • Check your snow shovels, and/or be sure your snow blower is in good working order
  • If you live in an area that is plagued by winter storms, consider a space heater that runs on a fuel source other than electricity.
  • Before the winter hits hard, access any dangerous trees on your property, and if they pose a threat to your house, consider removing limbs, or the entire tree if deemed necessary
  • Have crafts and games available to entertain the family while the power is out, this can be a real lifesaver. lol

If you are 100% ready, with no worries or concerns, a snow day is a great excuse to drop the daily "routine" and enjoy the time you have with your family.
